Weddings go quicker than anyone expects. You've got a photographer to work with, guests you've not seen in years, and a day that'll feel like an afternoon. The last thing you need is someone else asking for your time. So I don't — I work around whatever's happening and let the day run itself.

That doesn't mean I'm not watching. Over ten years as a camera operator in television gives you a decent instinct for when something's about to happen and where to be for it — the look between you during the vows, someone in the second row quietly losing it, whoever's speaking next realising their turn has come.

Speeches are the bit people underestimate. You'll be too busy being nervous or laughing to take much of it in, and you'll want to hear it properly later. I record audio directly, not from across the room, so the voices come back clean — the pause before the line someone was worried about, whoever goes off-script. That's the part families end up watching again years later.

Then I take it all away and turn it into a film that you will want to watch again and again.
